Congress Passes Broad Defense Bill Supporting Troops, New Veterans
Critical Provisions Address Invisible Wounds, Military Sexual Trauma
NEW YORK - Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country's first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, applauded the Senate for bipartisan passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This vital legislation will support troops and new veterans by expanding access to DoD mental health counselors, improving post-deployment screenings for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and creating a comprehensive policy on Military Sexual Trauma (MST) prevention and response.

Congress Passes Crucial Legislation Expanding the New GI Bill
Upgrades Cover Benefits for National Guardsmen, Vocational Students
NEW YORK - Today, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country's first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, applauded Congress for passing the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act (S.3447). This critical legislation will upgrade the Post-9/11 GI Bill by expanding benefits to new veterans studying at vocational schools, granting full GI Bill credit to National Guardsmen responding to national disasters and simplifying the Yellow Ribbon Program for veterans enrolling at private schools.

Critical Provisions to Address Invisible Wounds, Military Sexual Trauma Included
NEW YORK - Today, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country's first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, called on the Senate to swiftly pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Although “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has dominated the national discussion, and it is undoubtedly important, it is only one part of the vital Defense Bill. This broad legislation also includes provisions to expand mental health care resources, address Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST), extend the stop loss deadline and improve the electronic sharing of health records between the DoD and the VA.

Obama Signs Historic Legilsation for Veterans Healthcare, IAVA Attends White House Signing Ceremony

Starting Oct. 2nd, student veterans can apply online at www.va.gov for emergency payments or request free transportation to the nearest VA benefits office to submit their claim.
